Court discharges, acquits housewife accused of robbery

A Kano Magistrate Court (Court No. 54) has discharged and acquitted a housewife, Khadijah Sani, who was standing trial over allegations of armed robbery and conspiracy. 

The case followed a complaint filed by her former husband, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, a resident of Kano city.

During an earlier sitting, the prosecution, led by Barrister Zainab D. Aliyu, had arraigned Khadijah Sani alongside one Usaini Sani on charges of conspiracy and armed robbery. 

The court subsequently ordered their remand in a correctional facility pending further legal proceedings.

The complainant, through his counsel, had accused Khadijah of conspiring to carry out armed robbery attacks at his residence on five different occasions. He alleged that large sums of money and other valuable items were stolen during these incidents.

However, the prosecution later informed the court that after a thorough investigation and legal review, the state government’s legal team advised that Khadijah Sani had no case to answer. 

Consequently, the prosecution applied for her discharge and acquittal.

In her ruling, the presiding magistrate, Rabi Abdulkadir, reviewed the case file and the legal advice from the Ministry of Justice, and accordingly discharged and acquitted the accused.

Speaking after the judgment, Khadijah expressed gratitude to Allah (SWT) for her acquittal after spending 45 days in police and correctional custody.

Meanwhile, a member of her family told journalists that they would continue to take legal steps to fully protect her rights and clear her name in any subsequent proceedings.
