Court jails man 5 years for burglary, stealing

A magistrate court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, yesterday sentenced a 25-year-old man, Yusuf Ishola, to five years imprisonment for burglary and theft.
Ishola, of no fixed address, had pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of burglary and stealing.
The prosecutor, Famous Edegbue, had told the court that the accused committed the offences, with some others still at large, on August 25, 2018 at the Papa Sabo area of Abeokuta.
Edegbue said the accused broke into the house of one Mrs Shotayo Isiwatu by using an iron rod to break the door and stole phones and money, all valued at N257,000.
In his judgment, Magistrate Aliu Soneye held that all the evidence tendered in court against the accused proved beyond reasonable doubt that he was guilty of the charges.
Soneye, therefore, sentenced him to five years imprisonment without an option of fine.
Also, in another judgment, Magistrate Soneye sentenced a 32-year-old man, Hammed Odenike, to two years imprisonment for stealing a Techno phone and cash.
The prosecutor, Matthew Famuyiwa, told the court that the accused committed the offences on November 27, 2018 at Ojuolape Shotebi Close, Amolaso, Abeokuta.
Famuyiwa said that the accused entered into the complainant’s shop and stole a Techno WX3 phone valued at N24,000 and N2,150 cash, belonging to one Mrs Adegun Ebunoluwa.
The prosecutor told the court that the accused entered the complainant’s shop on the pretext he wanted to buy sachet water. He, however, observed the complainant was sleeping and seized the opportunity to steal the phone and money.
The magistrate, Soneye, held that the accused was a serial convict who had refused to change from his stealing habit.
