A court in Adamawa State has sentenced a handcuffed thief who escaped from police custody and dashed handcuffs to his friend who then sold them to scavengers known as “Baban bola”.

Police had rearrested Dalhatu Said after he crossed the fence of the police outpost at Sangere on the outskirt of Yola where he had been detained and dashed the handcuff to his friend who sold the gears to metal scavengers.

The suspect was arrested after he was reported to the police for conniving with other criminals to steal three turkeys on the 22nd of September.

The Upper Area Court 4 presided over by Ibrahim Musa Ulenda convicted the suspect on charges of theft and escape from lawful custody.

The court sentenced the defendant to one year term for escaping from lawful custody and another three years for theft with the option of N10,000 and N50,000 fine respectively. The judge also ordered the convict to pay N7,000 compensation.
