A magistrate court sitting in Gwagwalada, Abuja, has ordered that two persons be remanded in police custody for allegedly assaulting police officers on duty.

The presiding judge, A. I. Ibrahim, gave the order after the accused persons, who were arraigned before the court, pleaded not guilty to the charges against them and adjourned the matter till Friday, November 20, 2020, for ruling.

The prosecutor, Barrister A. A. Tanko, who arraigned the two accused persons, Peter Alhassan and Sunday Emmanuel, said they were charged on criminal conspiracy, obstruction of a public servant and serious assault on police officers on duty, under sections 97, 148 and 265 of the penal code law.

He told the court that the accused persons and four others who are now at large conspired and obstructed a team of police officers led by Inspector Ayo Babatunde, while performing their lawful duty and hit some of the police officers on duty with sticks, axes and cutlasses opposite ECWA Church, Kwali.

Counsel to the defendants, Barrister Enoch Etsu, had earlier sought bail of the defendants under sections 158 and 162 of the administration of criminal justice act.

But the prosecutor, Barrister Tanko, argued that granting bail to the defendants may jeopardize the case since the four other suspects were still at large.
