Court remands 4 over alleged conspiracy, murder in Kano

A magistrates’ court sitting in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano Municipal, has ordered the remand of four suspects over alleged criminal conspiracy and the murder of one Yusuf Aliyasu following a dispute over a power bank.

The defendants — Dahiru Isa, Abdullahi Yushau, popularly known as Daba-Daba, Saidu Murtala, also known as Ruwa-Ruwa, and Zahraddeen Umar — all residents of Rumawa village, were arraigned before the court by the state prosecutor, Barrister Faisal Ibrahim Mai-Atamfa.

The court registrar, Abdulkadir Bazallahi, read the charges to the defendants, which bordered on criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, contrary to Sections 97 and 221 of the Penal Code.

According to the prosecution, the accused persons allegedly conspired and attacked the deceased with local weapons during an altercation over a power bank, inflicting severe injuries that later resulted in his death.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor applied for an adjournment to enable the state to obtain legal advice, while counsel to the defendants, Barrister Tajuddeen Abdulmumin, urged the court to grant his clients bail.

After listening to submissions from both parties, the presiding judge, Justice Rabi Aminu, granted the prosecution’s application and declined the bail request.
The court subsequently ordered that the defendants be remanded in a correctional facility and adjourned the matter until July 2 for continuation of hearing.
