Court remands 5 over robbery in Abuja

An FCT High Court in Apo, Abuja has ordered that five suspected armed robbers arraigned by the FCT Commissioner of Police be remanded in Kuje prisons.

The suspects are Afolabi Ismail, 27; Umar Alkali, 30; Isah Mohammed, 37; Isaiah Amos; and Yahaya Hassan, all of Kuje, Abuja.

Police prosecutor, Barrister Donatus Abah, told the court that the suspects on August 1, 2017 robbed one Abdulrahman Salihu and his household in Kuje and carted away an HP laptop, gold necklaces, earrings, bracelets and N250,000 cash.

He said the suspects while armed with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons conspired and agreed together to rob the man and his household, an offence that he said is contrary to Section 97 of the Penal Code Law.

They were also charged with the criminal offence of house trespass with the intention to commit the offence of armed robbery. This is said to be punishable under Section 352 of the Penal Code Law.

While Ismail pleaded guilty to count one and four of the four-count charge, he pleaded not guilty to two and three. The other suspects pleaded not guilty to all the four-count charge when read to them in court.

The trial judge, Justice Adegbola Adeniyi, thereafter adjourned the matter to December 5 for hearing and ordered the suspects to be remanded in prison.

Upon hearing the decision of the court that the suspects be remanded in Kuje prisons till the next adjourned date, relatives of the suspects broke down in tears.
