Court remands driver over alleged rape of teenager

A 34-year-old driver was on Friday remanded in a Makurdi custodial facility by a Magistrates’ court sitting in Makurdi for allegedly raping a teenage girl.

The accused, Iordye Edwin, allegedly committed the offence which contravenes Section 284 of the Penal Code of Benue State, 2004.

Prosecution told the court that the case was reported on June 13, 2022.

The complainant, according to prosecution, stated that, her cousin, one Comfort, 15, was having leg pain and the defendant came as a native doctor to treat her.

The accused reportedly asked Comfort to remove her clothes while he rubbed a substance on her body but forcefully had carnal knowledge of her in the process.

The defendant was consequently arrested for committing the offence.

When the case came up, no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction.

Prosecution said investigation into the matter was still ongoing and asked the court for another day for mention.

The Magistrate, Vincent Kor, ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Center, Makurdi, pending further investigation.

The case was adjourned to August 2 for further mention.
