A Chief Magistrate Court, sitting in Jos Metropolitan Development Board on Wednesday in Jos, sentenced a 48-year-old businessman,  Ahmed Mohammed to one year in prison for criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The Judge, Roseline Baraje, who sentenced Mohammed, however gave him an option to pay a fine of N15,000, for criminal breach of trust and N20,000 for cheating

Baraje also ordered the convict to pay N55,000 to the complainant as compensation, adding that the judgment would serve as deterrent to those who would want to indulge in criminal acts.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ijuptil Thiawu , told the court that the case was reported  on Jan. 21 , at the `C’ Division Police Station by one Abdullahi Musa of NO E2 Patrick street Jos who is the complainant.

Thiawu said that the convict collected N55,000 from the complainant as rent for a house for one year, but refused to remit the money to the house owner.

He said the convict spent the money to solve his personal needs and left the complainant without a house.

On arraignment, the accused pleaded guilty to the two counts of criminal breach of trust and cheating, which the prosecution said contravened the provisions of sections 296 and 306 of the Penal Code.(NAN).
