The national secretariat of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has been shut by Federal High Court, Abuja due to a lingering crisis among members, according to an official of the association.
The Chairman, Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the association, Abdullahi Maje, confirmed the development to newsmen at a press briefing in Abuja.
It was gathered that the order was to prevent the breakdown of law and order by the two warring factions of the association laying claim to the national leadership seat.
Maje, who is also the Chairman of Suleja Local Government Area, when responding to a question on why they were holding activities outside their national secretariat, disclosed that the court had ordered the IMC and other faction to refrain from accessing the secretariat pending the determination of the substantive suit.
He said: “Presently, there is a faction in ALGON, and we are before the court.
“Yesterday (Wednesday), we were before the Commissioner of Police, FCT command and we were all directed to do our activities separately, pending the termination of the court case.
“I believe the other faction, led by Kolade Alabi, was also having their own press briefing as well as IMC decided to have their own press briefing also.”
Daily Trust reports that a faction is being led by the immediate past national president of the association, Kolade David Alabi, while the other faction is being led by Maje.
When our correspondent visited the office located at 6th floor, 10 Zambezi Crescent, Maitama, Abuja on Thursday, no activity was ongoing as some police officers were sighted manning the premises.
