Court slams N5m damages on Airtel

An Abuja court has fined mobile telecoms firm Airtel N5 million for violating a customer’s right to privacy.

Emmanuel Anene had sued Airtel in December for continuously disturbing him with unsolicited messages to his phone line.

Court records showed Anene complained about the disturbances but Airtel did nothing about it.

The court awarded a N5m fine for the “obvious inconveniences, discomfort and the embarrassments” Anene had “undeniably gone through.”

Anene had earlier demanded N200 million in damages.
