The Environmental Health Registration Council of Nigeria, in collaboration with Association of Kano Indigenous Waste Management, has disinfected two correctional centres at Goron Dutse and Kurmawa in Kano metropolis as part of efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking during the flag-off of the exercise, the Zonal Director, North-West of the council, Malam Bala Muhammad Tukur, said the correctional centres were disinfected to reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 among the inmates.

Tukur said the exercise would be extended to other facilities in the state, adding that apart from disinfecting some selected places, the council would also donate liquid soap and sanitisers to the state government for distribution to public places.

Responding, the Deputy Comptroller of Kurmawa Medium Security Correctional Centre, Barrister Ibrahim Idris, said the centre had taken several measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among its inmates.

Idris thanked the council for the gesture, enjoining other groups and individuals to emulate the gesture as government could  not do it alone.

“This is not the first time this association is assisting the centre. It has helped the centre in so many ways including fumigation, waste management and water supply,” he stated.
