Experts have said that quality data is critical to combating the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring effective healthcare service delivery.
They said relevant organisations must involve health information management and medical records professionals for data transactions to guarantee quality healthcare data.
They gave the advice during the 41st annual general meeting and national scientific conference of the Association of Health Records and Information Management Practitioners of Nigeria (AHRIMPN) in collaboration with the Health Records Officers’ Registration Board of Nigeria in Abuja.
The Director, Health Planning, Research and Statistics of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Ngozi Azodoh, said the availability of quality data is one of the building blocks of a resilient health system all over the world.
She said poorly secured health data could potentially harm reputation, lead to stigmatization, trigger misdiagnosis and undermine current efforts to curb the spread of the COVID-19.
The minister of State for Health, Dr Adeleke Olorunnimbe Mamora, advised health records and information management professionals to strengthen plans towards harnessing quality data in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Focus on collective mandates and improvement of behavioural changes to data collection, collation, analyses, dissemination and use,” he urged.
The national president of the Association of AHRIMPN, Okereke Nwani, said in the association’s quest for standards, all conference papers were empirical and that participants would earn many continuous professional development points.
