As part of the move to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, especially at the Correctional Custodial Centre in Ondo State, the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has ordered the release of 26 inmates with immediate effect.
A statement released yesterday by the press secretary to the governor, Mr Segun Ajiboye, stated that the inmates were those that had served portions of their sentences after being duly sentenced to various terms of imprisonment.
Akeredolu, the statement said, believed that decongesting the Correctional Custodial Centre would help prevent the spread of Covid-19 not only among inmates, but also the officials.
In a related development, the state government has started the distribution of palliatives to people of Idanre Local Government with thousands benefitting.
The distribution was anchored by the Ondo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Yemi Olowolabi and the Chairman of the Idanre Local Government Food Palliatives Committee, the Owa of Idanre, Oba Frederick Adegunle Aroloye, Arubiefin IV.
In his brief remarks before the distribution, Oba Aroloye lauded Gov Akeredolu for the kind gesture, which he said further showed his love for all the people, irrespective of party membership.
