At least 11 cattle have been allegedly shot dead or poisoned in separate incidents across the Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, the Plateau State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), confirmed the developments.
He said the first incident occurred near Kwi community in Riyom LGA, where eight cattle were poisoned, while the second occurred in the Gadabiyu area, where three cattle were shot dead.
Babayo said the association has reported the incidents to the police, the DSS, and the military task force, Operation Safe Haven.
The MACBAN chairman accused members of the Berom ethnic group of launching the attacks, adding that the targeted killing of livestock is a “direct threat to peace, food security, and inter-communal coexistence.”
In response, the Berom Youth Moulders’ Association (BYM) rejected the allegations, describing them as unfounded, urging the public to disregard them.
In a statement signed by Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the group, the BYM claimed no such incidents occurred in the areas mentioned.
Instead, the group accused the herding community of fabricating the reports as a precursor to planned attacks on Berom communities.
