The Kano state commissioner of Police, Mohammed Wakili has appealed to the federal and state governments to revitalize the existing rehabilitation centres, and to establish more across the country so as to provide effective entrepreneurship training for the victims of drug and substance abuse before their eventual reintegration into the society.

The police chieftain emphasized that unless the victims of drug abuse are given vocational training that could always keep them engaged in productive ventures, their arrests and prosecutions would never proffer sustainable solution to the menace of drug and substance abuse among the youth and married women.

He made the appeal on wednesday when a delegation of health professionals under the aegis of Smile Mission Healthcare Organisation paid him a courtesy visit in his office at Bompai police headquarters.

The group was at the CP’s office to seek for synergy in the fight against drug abuse and other related crimes like sexual violence.

CP singham described the menace of drug abuse as a time bomb, calling for more synergies cutting across various sections and institutions of the society to be able to contain it.

“If you take the one who abuse the drug actually he is a victim, he is not the problem the problem is he who supplies it to him because he that supplies it to him does so for more often than not economic gains. I have been arresting them, but I say that’s not the solution, there must be a solution to this problem. If the cause is not address you can’t solve that problem.

“For us to have meaningful solution we need more than these arrests, jail, After arrest so what, you take them to court, after that you sent them to prison for one or two months or years, they will come out, what happens, may be they go back more trained. So we are having a very big social problem of which this thing is more than singham, it is more than smile, we need more than synergy, the governments must be involve.

“When we were growing up the education system that time had it that we had secondary schools, teachers colleges, we had craft schools so if we really want to do something about this issues we have to do something about our education system as well even these your rehabs, you need to teach them a profession or a craft so that when they come out they will be engaged in doing something” Wakili said.
