The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) and West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP Nigeria) have sensitised farmers in Osun State on the proper use of pesticides so as to ensure safety of their health and the environment.
Speaking at a workshop organized by CPC in Osogbo, Osun State, the Director General of the council, Mrs Dupe Atoki warned the farmers that the inappropriate use of pesticides may result into respiratory tract damage, cancer, adverse environmental effect, deformities, miscarriages, abnormal births among others.
During the workshop, papers were presented by different resource persons on various safe and responsible ways that farmers should handle pesticides, from the stage of purchase, through calibration and dilution, to the stage of application in the farm and the manner of storage where necessary.
According to Atoki, “CPC is a parastatal of the federal government saddled with the responsibility to undertake campaigns that will lead to increased consumer awareness, ensure that consumers interest receive due consideration at the appropriate forum and generally to protect and promote the rights of consumers in Nigeria”.
