Journalists from Vietnam, Ukraine, Sudan and Venezuala will be honoured with Committee to Protect Journalists’ 2018 International Press Freedom Awards. The journalists-imprisoned blogger Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, known as “Mother Mushroom”, Anastasiya Stanko, co-founder of the independent media channel Hromadske, freelancer Amal Khalifa Idris Habbani, and investigative reporter Luz Mely Reyes-have faced legal action, threats, and arrest for their work. Philippine journalist Maria Ressa of the news website Rappler, will receive the Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award.
The Gwen Ifill is presented annually to an individual who has shown extraordinary and sustained achievement in the cause of press freedom. Originally the Burton Benjamin Memorial Award, it was renamed in 2017 to honor Gwen Ifill, the veteran journalist and former CPJ board member who died in 2016.
The Awards dinner will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at the Grand Hyatt New York, USA. (CPJ)
