He told reporters yesterday in Abuja that he was not pressurised to withdraw for Jonathan even though that has been the position of members of the party, saying it was due to his conviction and in the interest of national development.
“After months of campaigns, wide consultations and deliberations as political party and opinions received from millions of our members, supporters and Nigerians across the country, CPP has decided to adopt President Goodluck Jonathan as our presidential candidate for March 28, 2015 presidential election,” Eke said.
He said their decision was based on the ground and understanding that President Jonathan shall continue to pursue and complete his transformation agenda, implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference, achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), sign the people with disability bill into law and solve the intractable problem of power supply.
He said: “We are also backing him with the hope that the challenges of internally displaced persons should be adequately addressed, that efforts should be increased in fighting corruption under the rule of law, that oil theft should be addressed quickly, that oil companies be made to play their roles as obtained in other countries, that the second Niger Bridge be completed as planned and that the unity of Nigeria should not be subjected to any renegotiation.”
He therefore urged members of the party to shift their support to President Jonathan and Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo.
