No casualty was recorded because the incident took place when workers were not at work, a source at the site said.
It was said the tall machine fell due to impact of thunder storm.
Our reporter who observed the unbalanced position of the crane from afar could not get official information from Churchgate Investments Limited, the contractor.
Abuja World Trade Centre is a $1 billion project. President Goodluck Jonathan performed the start of work ceremony for the centre in September, 2011.
The centre sits on 6.102 hectares of land along Constitution Road (Airport return Road), Central Business District, Abuja.
The N152 billion project is jointly owned by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and First Intercontinental Properties Limited, a subsidiary of Churchgate Group under Public Private Partnership (PPP).
The two towers will be surrounded by six other towers of 22 storey each. Three of the six 22-storey towers are for commercial purposes while the other three are residential.
The center is said to be the best in Africa. It comprises a hotel, shopping mall and top-rate office accommodation.
It will have facilities like basement parking lots, swimming pools and other world class recreational facilities.
Residential apartments include one-bedroom apartments, two-bedroom apartments, two-bedroom duplex apartments, three-bedroom apartments, five-bedroom villa apartments, six-bedroom penthouse villas.
The investment arm of FCTA, the Abuja Investments Company Ltd oversees the project on behalf of government. The investment company officials were hostile when our reporter visited their office seeking information concerning the collapsed crane.
The first two towers of the centre (24 and 25 floors, so far the tallest in the city) were intended to be completed in June this year. With the recent crane crash incident, many fear completion time for the project might get even longer.
