Professor Asabe Kabir of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto has noted with concern that the creative works of Northern women are not given the needed attention.
She made the lamentation while delivering the 18th inaugural lecture of the university titled ‘Breaking the silence northern Nigerian women’s self-expression through oral literature and literary writings.’
According to her, Hausa women writers have over the years become a force to reckon with in the African literary scene as they far surpassed the number of women who write in the English language.
"But because they write in the Indigenous language, their creativity hardly receives the required attention," she said
She observed that most of their write- ups convey their personal experiences in the male dominated societies.
Mrs Kabir who is a professor of Oral and African Literature, noted that Hausa women were using their works to express and tackle what they observed as female subjugation, abuse and denials while enlightening readers about their culture and tradition.
” The creative arts of women from northern Nigeria deserve attention and their various works ought to have greater critical attention, " she stressed.
Prof Asabe added, "This is because of their distinctive viewpoints as they attempt to give expression to voices that have not always been heard as loudly and clearly as they should have been.”
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Abdullahi Zuru who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Atiku Yahayya, said that the inaugural lecture series in the institution bolster effective teaching and and learning, as well as boost socialization among members of the university community.
