CRIN releases list of banned pesticides for cocoa production

The Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), Ibadan has released some list of insecticides that must not be used for cocoa production.

The institute announced this in its Bulletin made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Thursday.

The insecticides include Acephate, Amitraz, Aldrin, Azinphos-methyl, Cabaryl, Cabofuran, Carbosulfan, Cartap, Terbufos, Cyhexatin, Dichlorvos(DDVP), Dieldrin, Dioxacarb and Endosulfan.

According to it, fungicides such as Benomyl, Captafol, Hexaconazole, Pyrifenox, Triadimefon, Tridamorph, Zineb, Copper-Sulphate, Carbide and fumigants such as Allethrin, Fenitrothion, Isoprocarn, Permethrin, Resmethrin and Tetramethrin also should not be used.

It added that herbicides such as Ametryn, Atrazine, Diuron, Fomesafen, Methl arsenic acid and 2,4, 5-T had also been banned.

According to the bulletin, the CRIN currently approved pesticides to be used for cocoa farming in Nigeria.

“For fungicides, we have are approved Ridomil Gold 66WP with Cuprous Oxide + Metalaxy-M ingredient, to tackle black pod, Ultimax Plus, with Metalaxyl+Copper Hydroxide to tackle black pod.

“There is Funguran-OH with Copper Hydroxide ingredient to tackle black pod, copper nordox 75 wp, with cuprous oxide, champ DP with Copper Hydroxide, Kocide 101 with Cuprous Hydroxide.

“We have Cabrio Duo with Pyroclostrobin + Dimethomorph, red force with Copper Oxide + Metalaxyl-m, Pergado with Metalaxyl-m+ Mandipropamid ingredient, all to tackle black pod.

“For insecticides, we have Actara 25 WG with Thiamethoxam, Esiom 150 SL with Acetamiprid+ Cypermethrin, Proteus 170 O-tec with Acetamiprid+ Cypermethrin ingredient, all to tackle Mirid.

“For herbicides, there are touch-down with Glyphosate, clear weed with glyphosate and round up with glyphosate ingredients, all to tackle weed.

“Then for fumigants, we have Phostoxin with Aluminum Phosphide for storage pests,” it stated.

It said remarked that a number of technologies were produced by CRIN from cocoa, coffee, kola, cashew and tea (its mandate crops).

The bulletin added that the technologies were available for uptake by entrepreneurs, investors, farmers, industrialists and the public for the development of the country.

“They include cocoa bread, milk chocolate, cocoa powder, CRIN VITA, cocoa-cola beverage, cocoa custard, cocoa wine, cola wine, coffee wine, cashew wine, tea wine, cashew juice, choco garri, black soap, hair cream, cashew juice extractor.

“Investment opportunities abound in CRIN technologies, they are available for commercialisation, the public is free to visit CRIN for detailed information and advisory services.

“Investors, NGOs, industrialists and partners are welcome to fund the technologies for empowerment of young entrepreneurs, job creation, livelihood improvement, food and nutrition security.

“Up-takers are encouraged to write personal or joint research proposals in collaboration with CRIN on the development of new products for end users,” it stated. (NAN)
