Some aggrieved members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing, have accused the Chairman Mr. Stephen Knabayi of refusing leave office after he was suspended from work.

A statement jointly signed Kure Lamulomgs, Yaqqub Mohammed, Jiya Umar, Aba Emmanuel and Aturu Cecilia said Knabayi should not be parading himself as the chairman of the union after being suspended alongside other executives over alleged diversion of money from the teachers housing scheme and a loan granted the union

But Knabayi said the allegations remain untrue as those making it refused to let go of an election they lost a year ago.

 “The teachers in the FCT were compelled by the failure of the union to uphold its constitutional stipulations, ran to the ICPC and the EFCC for help,” they said.

Reacting, Mr. Knabayi said those accusing him were his friends until the elections of December 2015, which they lost openly and by wide margins.

 “There have been interventions from the national headquarters and also some committees in the FCT. It is the right of union members to elect those they want as their leaders”.

The election has come and gone, what else did they want? They should consider the interest of the members and not see my reconciliatory moves as weakness,” he said.
