Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has disclosed that his administration is ready to upgrade the 50-room athletes’ hostel inside the UJ Esuene Stadium complex Calabar.
A private organisation has received the approval from the governor to begin the renovation of the four storey accommodation facility for athletes and officials.
Otu said his administration will provide a level playing ground for private sector partnership in the development of the sports facilities in the state.
He emphasised that the dynamics of time and cost content have made it crucial for the private sector to support financially for sports to thrive and meet global standards.

“Football and other sports we enjoy today take a lot of investment to make it happen. As a state, sports is very important to us. We need to open our doors to mutually beneficial private sector partnerships to take our sports sector forward,” said Otu.
He said modernising the hostel which houses athletes and officials during sporting events has also made the renovation of the whole stadium a necessity.
“We will be looking for an investor to partner with the Cross River State government to turn the stadium into a very beautiful sporting facility,” he said.
The governor also said that his administration is interested in hunting for sports talents in the state.
