Cross River earmarks N1bn for banana plantations

Cross River State commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Prof. Anthony Eneji, has confirmed that not less than N1 billion has been earmarked for the two banana plantations embarked upon by the state government.

Eneji said 5000 hectares of land have already been acquired at Odukpani and in Boki LGAs of the state for the plantations, adding that that in Odukpani will soon be harvested.

In an interview, the commissioner explained that the state government was paying serious attention to the banana project because of the vast markets available for the species of bananas now been cultivated in the state.

He said the suckers for the banana were imported, making it unique in the country, adding that it is the type consumed in Europe.
