“This is part of our efforts at making swimming a priority event in all sporting competitions,’’ the state Commissioner for Sports, Raymond Obeten, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.

He said that since the state was surrounded by waters, “it has been decided that we make swimming a priority event’’.

“It is worrisome that we are living in a coastal area surrounded by water and yet we cannot display skills in swimming.

“As part of our sport development plan, we have decided to place swimming above any other sporting events,’’ Obetan said.

He said the ministry had recruited people with swimming skills from across the 18 local government areas of the state.

“We have employed so many of them and we are currently conducting trials to fish out those who have the required talents,’’ Obeten said.

He said the state hoped to take the leading position in swimming at the 2012 National Sports Festival in Lagos. (NAN)
