The Commissioner for Education, Professor Offiong E. Offiong, gave the warning during an interactive session with proprietors of private nursery, primary and secondary schools in the state.
Professor Offiong lamented the poor standard obtained in some private schools in the state, saying that was unacceptable. Offiong said government would not hesitate to close any school that failed to meet the standard requirement.
He said that the interactive session was organized to provide a forum for the government and proprietors to share ideas on the way forward in the provision of qualitative education in the state.
“The minimum standard for education set by government for all schools will not be compromised. Operating a standard school is capital intensive and it should be left for people who have a passion and commitment for qualitative education,” he said.
He promised to accommodate private school teachers in the state government’s teacher-retraining programme and emphasized the government’s zero tolerance for examination malpractice.
