In Calabar, the state capital, the Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) specifically warned that, henceforth, any cattle caught within the city shall immediately be confiscated by officials of CUDA and the Governor’s Task-force on Development Control.
In a statement, CUDA urged herdsmen to comply with State Environmental Laws.
The statement said: “Cattle owners are hereby advised in their own interest to restrict the movement and grazing of their cattle’s within approved grazing areas.
“This is line with state government’s determination and desire to maintain and sustain the clean and green status of Calabar, the state capital, and in line with the State Environmental Laws.”
In another development, as part of efforts towards arresting the menace of flooding and its attendant destruction of properties during rainy season, CUDA has commenced the un-blocking of culverts and desilting of drains in the metropolis.
The Executive Secretary of CUDA, Gabriel Egari, said that the exercise was to ensure free flow of storm water and avoid flooding during the fast approaching rainy season.
Egari said that they have commenced the desilting of drains early enough to ensure that residents were not exposed to the traumatising effect of flooding which has been the fear during rainy season.
Egari lamented that despite repeated warning and appeals for residents to avoid dumping of refuse into drains, some people have continued to violate and flout government directives.
This, he noted, has led to the incessant cases of flooding which have left many people homeless with properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
CUDA boss, therefore, announced that a surveillance team has been put in place to arrest and charge defaulters to court for dumping refuse into the drains.
