Cross River women embark on turmeric farm project

Women group in Bunyia community of Boki LGA of Cross River State has embarked on the project of planting turmeric.

The purpose is for the group, with membership running close to 50, to pull their resources together and boost their incomes as individuals and group.

The women group is enjoying funding from Offer of Jobs and Opportunities for Women and Children Network (OJO-WACNET).

Already, the group has bought large expanse of lands and planted turmeric with hope that it would yield much for them.

Founder of the OJO-WACNET, Dr. Tony Wemton, an agriculture engineer, explained that the turmeric project is a stepping stone for harnessing the potentials of women, adding that they aim to empower households in the communities.

“The first step of empowerment for the community women will enable them in all its ramifications. 

They have also planned to organise free agricultural programmes and First Aid training for members local agriculture cooperative societies.

Speaking to journalists, President of the Boki Women of Cross River under the banner of Bayinyi Boki Worldwide, Mrs. Florence Odok, enjoined Irruan women to show interest in development programmes organised for the Boki women.

She also encouraged them to participate actively in the Boki women annual August social and networking meetings.

Public Relations Officer of Bayinyi Boki Worldwide, Ambassador Florence Kekong, disclosed that the women are also into other areas of community farming which have boosted food supplies in the state.
