A civil society organization, the Coalition Against Corruption and Bad Governance (CACOBAG), has threatened legal action to stop the implementation of the new tax laws.
Speaking at a press conference, the convener of the group, Comrade Toyin Raheem accused the federal government of imposing a tax regime that lacks transparency, proper legislative procedure, and public consultation.
“President Tinubu’s tax reform is ill conceived and deceits to further impoverish Nigerians. It’s a triple burden on the masses.
“If the President refuses to allow wise counsel to prevail, we shall have no option but to approach the court to stop its implementation,” he said.

 

He alleged that the tax reforms would worsen poverty and increase the economic burden on the low income earners.

 

“The new tax laws are for capital accumulation and exploitation of the masses. The traders, hawkers, cart pushers, and low-income earners will be affected adversely. The claim that minimum wage earners will not pay taxes is a ruse,” he said.

 

He called on the National Assembly to conduct a public inquiry into the alleged alterations in the gazetted version of the law and to ensure transparency in the legislative process.

 

“The Nigerian people deserve a tax system that is fair, transparent, and accountable. A government that prioritizes profit over the welfare of its citizens cannot be said to be progressive,” he said.

 

He urged other civil society groups and legal experts to join the call for a suspension of the tax law’s implementation pending a comprehensive review.
