The Committee on the Revitalisation of Agricultural Extension Services has called on state governments to adequately fund Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) to enable them perform their duties maximally.
This was part of the report submitted by the committee set up by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture based on the order from President Muhammadu Buhari to revive the agricultural sector.
The committee recommends the establishment at national, state and local government levels of agricultural extension implementation steering committees to perform oversight and co-coordinating functions.
The committee implored governments to establish necessary mechanism for the formulation of national policy on agricultural extension and advisory services as quickly as possible.
It also emphasised the need for adequate and consistent source of fund for agricultural extension advisory services at all levels of government, backed by legislation, and the strengthening of the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension to formulate policy, co-ordinate, regulate and supervise extension service delivery in Nigeria.
