A rival cult clash has claimed the life of an unidentified man at the Osekita area of Iworoko-Ekiti in Ekiti State.

Some witnesses alleged that it was a clash of two rival cult groups in the Ekiti State University (EKSU) Ado Ekiti.

Our correspondent gathered from sources in Ado Ekiti that the victim was shot several times before he was hacked to death.

The body of the victim was left on the road after he was killed, with the development leading to a pandemonium in the community.

Some students told our correspondent that the incident occurred at about 7.30pm on Monday.

A student, who didn’t want to be identified, said, “At about 7.30pm we began to hear gunshots and a pandemonium followed. What we learnt was that it was an ambush of the victim. His assailants caught up with him on his way and shot him after which they dealt him machete blows in his head. We are now living in fear because there may be reprisal attacks.”

Reacting to the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State police command, Mr Alberto Adeyemi, who confirmed the killing, said it was a clash of rival cultists.  Adeyemi, a Superintendent of Police, said men of the command got wind of the clash but said that by the time the police got there, the deceased had been macheted to death.

Adeyemi said investigation has begun into the killing, “and we will soon arrest the culprits and bring them to book.”
