A bill to attract death penalty for cultists and life imprisonment for anybody who harbours cultista has been sent to the Ekiti State House of Assembly by the Executive for consideration.

 If passed into law, the bill also plans to reward anybody who could give authentic information on cultists the sum of N1 million.

 Governor Ayodele Fayose stated this yesterday at Government House, Ado Ekiti, while meeting representatives of farmers across the state.

 The government’s latest stance was informed by the recent killings of two students of the Ekiti State University, EKSU.

 Similarly, the Deputy National Chairman (South) of All Progressives Congress and former Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni, has advised the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities to adopt a common and uniform approach to solving the problem of cultism and other evil vices rampaging the nation’s ivory towers.

 Oni, in a statement signed by his media aide, Steve Alabi, in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, said a common position must be adopted to ensure that former cultists who sometimes return to universities as staff and students were prevented from infiltrating the campuses.

 Oni said, “The Committee of Vice Chancellors must brace up to the challenges of cultism, which has become one of the most potent evils of the recent time. They need to organise security agents and those students who do not belong to cults into anti-cult vanguards to monitor and check the activities of cultists on our campuses and report cult members to the university authorities and law enforcement agents.”

 He suggested that the evil nature of cultism should be explained to young people in schools at all levels through sensitization, seminars, workshops, symposia, posters, handbills and public lectures.

 He also advised parents to desist from being members of secret cults and prevent their children from joining bad group.
