The murder of a middle-aged welder last Saturday by suspected cultists has sparked tension among residents of Iyana-Era and Abule in the Ojo area of Lagos State.

The victim, identified simply as Clement, was attacked and killed in front of his workshop on Saturday evening.

The incident has caused widespread fear, with residents expressing concerns over the deteriorating security situation.

According to witnesses, a group of five suspected cultists arriving on two motorcycles targeted Clement. “Immediately they arrived, one of them fired a shot at the welder while he was standing in front of his workplace. Other gang members jumped down, grabbed him, and began slashing his head with an axe,” one witness, who requested anonymity, recounted.

The witness added, “They stayed for some time to ensure he was dead before fleeing the scene.”

While the motive remains unclear, police sources suggest the killing may be linked to ongoing rivalries between cult groups in the area.

This tragedy follows a violent cult war in the Otto and Ijanikin communities just two weeks ago, which left one person dead and several others injured.

Residents are now calling for decisive action from the Ijanikin Police Station. “We are living in fear,” said one resident. “The police need to do more to protect us. This is not the first time we are experiencing cult-related violence; it’s time for the authorities to restore peace.”

While the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said she was not yet aware of the incident, graphic videos of the aftermath have already started  circulating on social media.
