The Chairman of the Kaduna State Chapter of Health Reform Foundation (HERFON), Lawal Abubakar, has attributed cultural misconception and low education among women to family planning rejection in Nigeria, especially in the North.
Abubakar who spoke at a three day budget tracking training for civil society organizations on family planning in Kaduna in conjunction with Partnership for Advocacy in Child and family Health (PACFaH,) said all the states in Nigeria do not have budgetary allocation or releases for Family Planning.
He said: “Most of the Northern states have recorded less than 10 percent contraceptive prevalence rate which is usually attributed to cultural misconceptions about child spacing/family planning, leading to many husbands rejecting family planning.
Also, there is a correlation between educational level and family planning acceptance. “Again, there are certain operational barriers whereby women have no easy access to family planning commodities due to poverty and geographic inaccessibility/distance from facility center and other things.
