As we prepare for the forthcoming elections, there is need for us to clearly  understand the difference between a  free and fair election  and one characterised by vote buying.

During elections, people are supposed to vote for candidates they believe in, not the highest bidder.  Sadly, vote buying has become the latest trend during elections, so much so that people now see election period as a time to make money. The low literacy level, endemic poverty and unemployment are not making things any easier.  But it is important for us to know that those brought into office through vote buying will not serve the people well.

Vote buying is not the only act of corruption that takes place during elections. There is also the misuse of power sometimes by security personnel and that should also be tackled.  The media can help by enlightening the masses on the implication of vote buying.
