The Oyo/Osun Command of the Nigeria Customs Service on Wednesday disclosed that it has arrested 24 suspected smugglers at the borders of the two states.
The comptroller of the command, Abdullahi Zulkifli, who disclosed this at a press conference, said the partial border closure by the Federal Government of Nigeria has reduced smuggling of illegal arms and ammunition into the country.
“The border closure has drastically reduced the rate kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria, and most importantly it is assisting in the fight against smuggling in Nigeria,” he said.
On the achievements of the command from January 2019, Zulkifli said through the anti-smuggling enforcement between January and November 2019, the command made 313 seizures with a Duty Paid Value of N518.6 million.
“The most remarkable of the achievements was the seizure of 1,040 SK Blocks with 101 bags of cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) on 29th September, 2019.
“Most of these goods were conveyed and concealed in trucks and vehicles meant for carrying out legitimate business and conveyance of commuters, but used to perpetrate the evil acts,” he added.
