The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has scored a major goal in its efforts to promote youth development and community engagement with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art sports facility at Coconut Under Bridge.
The new sports centre, which was formally opened on Wednesday is equipped with modern facilities, including a football pitch, basketball court, and volleyball court. The centre also features a gym, dressing rooms, and other amenities.
In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the importance of sports in promoting youth development and reducing crime.
He noted that the NCS is committed to supporting initiatives that promote the well-being and development of young people.
“The Nigeria Customs Service is not just about revenue collection; we are also about giving back to the community,” he said. “We believe that sports have the power to transform lives and communities, and we are proud to be a part of this initiative.”
In his welcome address, the Customs Controller, Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, PN Ntadi stated that the arena is dedicated as an honour to the man whose name it bears Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena (WASA).
He noted that the CGC is a man of uncommon diligence, professionalism, and dedication to duty, and that his approach was very grass rooted and in his service to Customs and to Nigeria as former National PRO, he exemplified integrity, hard work, and loyalty. Naming this facility after him is our way of saying that, that exemplary service should never be forgotten, and positive role models must continue to inspire the next generation.
“WASA is a practical expression of our belief that security is not only about enforcement, patrols, and interceptions. It is also about prevention. It is about giving our Youths alternatives to crime, restiveness, drug abuse, and other social vices. When we provide safe and positive spaces for recreation, mentorship, and healthy competition, we are investing in peace, stability, and the future of our communities” he said
Speaking further he said WASA is aimed at taking the nation’s youths off the streets and into constructive engagement.
According to him, Sports teach discipline, teamwork, leadership, resilience, and respect for rules which he said is the same values that guide them as Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service.
“By creating this arena, we are opening doors of opportunity for young people to discover their talents, channel their energy productively, and build hope for a better tomorrow.
“As a Command, we recognize that we cannot secure our environment alone. Community partnership is essential. This facility belongs to the community, and we trust that it will be protected, properly utilized, and maintained. We call on community leaders, parents, youth groups, and relevant stakeholders to take ownership of this project and ensure that it serves the purpose for which it was established” he said.
