The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has brought joy and hope to inmates of a correctional facility in Lagos, with the donation of a newly built classroom and educational materials.

The gesture, which is part of the service’s corporate social responsibility tagged “Customs Cares” aims to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.

Speaking during the handing over ceremony at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Center , the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, urged the inmates to make judicious use of the facility, which explained will help them reintegrate into the society when they complete their jail terms.

“Use your time here to embrace education or to learn a trade. This will help you get back to your feet when you are out of this place

“We believe that education is a key factor in the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates, and that is why we have decided to support the facility with this classroom and educational materials,” Adeniyi said.

The Comptroller added that the service would continue to support the facility and other worthy causes in the community.

Adeniyi also commissioned a state-of-the-art sports complex at the Western Marine Command, Lagos, stated that the facility is meant to help officers keep fit.

Also speaking, DCC Dan Ogu Incharge Medium Correctional centre Kirikiri Lagos state thanked the CGC for the gesture, assuring that the facility would be put into good use.

“We are grateful for this kind gesture, which will go a long way in supporting the education and rehabilitation of our inmates,” he said.

The inmates, who were visibly excited and grateful for the donation, promised to make good use of the facilities and materials provided.

The classroom and educational materials donated by the Customs service include a block of four classrooms equiped with air conditioners, IT desks, chairs, textbooks, and other learning aids.
