The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service, has handed over N519 million worth of cannabis sativa and four suspects to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

City & Crime learnt that the illicit substances, which were intercepted from different parts of Lagos, were smuggled into the country from the neighbouring West African countries.

Addressing journalists during a brief handing over ceremony at the Customs’ warehouse, Ikeja, the Controller of FOU, Kola Oladeji, said the bags containing the illicit substances were carefully concealed in different mini-buses and were being transported to different parts of the country by the owners before they were seized.

Oladeji stated that though, some of the suspects and the drivers of the vehicle used as means of conveyance bolted away on sighting Customs operatives, four of them were arrested.

Also speaking, the Deputy State Commander, Lagos State Command of the NDLEA, thanked the Nigeria Customs for always intercepting illicit substances, saying the drugs, if allowed to go into the market, would have further worsened the security situation in the country.

“We go after dealers because they are the actual criminals while users are treated as sick persons,” he added.
