Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, yesterday said they intercepted a total of 98 bags and 570 parcels of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp from smugglers in Ogun State.

It was gathered that the illicit substance also known as ‘skonk’ was allegedly being smuggled into the country from Benin Republic.

It was also learnt that the smugglers bought the drugs from Ghana and intended to distribute them to various Indian hemp selling joints in the country.

The Custom Controller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Ikeja, Mohammed Uba, who made the disclosure yesterday, said the bags of hemp were impounded along Olorunda axis of Ogun State based on intelligence. He said, “This seizure makes it the highest seizure of such hard drugs in the history of FOU A. You all know what would have happened if it got to the wrong hands undetected. In the spirit of interagency relationship, the seized Indian hemp will be handed over to NDLEA for further investigation.”
