The Nigerian Customs Services in collaboration with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has handed over 73 smuggled parrots confiscated in Kano to the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF).

The smuggled parrots were handed over to the foundation at the Kano Zoological Garden for onward relocation to southern Nigeria, which is the natural habitat of the birds before they were caught by the smugglers.

Daily Trust Saturday reports that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa command on June 21 intercepted 99 parrots during trafficking and handed them to NESREA for safekeeping at the Kano Zoological Garden.

The outgoing Director General of NCF, Dr. Muntari Aminu-Kano while receiving the surviving 73 birds assured of the foundation’s commitment to look after the birds before releasing them back to the forest.

On his part, Abdulraheem Mudashir, who represented his Director General, NESREA, expressed satisfaction while commending the efforts of the Nigeria Customs and Kano Zoological Garden for the interception and keeping the birds safe in their custody.
