The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) yesterday said it is planting 1,000 trees in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability across Abuja and other zones nationwide.

Speaking during the exercise in Abuja, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Bashir Adeniyi, described the initiative as a critical step toward preserving the environment for present and future generations.

“Officers and men work in different parts of the country that are already being challenged by environmental degradation. This is one initiative which has been aggressively implemented by the Customs Officers’ Wives Association, and we believe we should lend our support by mobilising personnel across the federation to participate actively,” he said. He noted that the programme has nationwide coverage, cutting across all customs zones.

Also speaking, the President of COWA, Kikelomo Adeniyi, said the association was scaling up its activities from local interventions to a broader sustainability drive.

“We are trying to elevate from local content into a more sustainable initiative. Already, we have planted trees in Abuja, Lagos and Sokoto, and we are also involving schoolchildren as ‘green ambassadors’ in this campaign,” she said.

According to her, the association set a target to plant 1,000 trees within one hour during the FCT exercise.
