Customs recovers 1,533 generators from smugglers

Customs operatives attached to the Headquarters Compliance Team have continued onslaught against suspected smugglers around the Owode/Idiroko axis in Ogun State.
The detectives at the weekend engaged suspected smugglers in a shootout along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, which caused the latter  to flee  and  left  behind a Mack Truck fully loaded with smuggled items.
When the team led by Assistant Comptroller Shittu Almaruf, carried out a search of the truck about 1,533 cartons of assorted brands of two stroke engine generators popularly called (I pass my neighbour) were recovered.
In an exclusive chat with Daily Trust , he  said the team in another operation intercepted a Maxi-Bus along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway.
He explained that the bus was laden with 542 cartons of foreign frozen poultry products.
He disclosed that his squad is saddled with the responsibility to enforce the fiscal policies of the federal government with regards to trade, in conjunction with other anti-smuggling arms of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The team leader disclosed that the team had been involved in series of seizures, apart from the most recent, stating that most of their seizures/detentions are usually domiciled in the nearest Customs formation, given the delicate nature of their assignment.
He said, “The items were subjected to 100% examination to ascertain the quantity of items seized, following which they were converted to seizure in line with sections 46 & 47 of the Customs Management Act, Cap 45 LFN”.
He stressed that the team was devising other means of ensuring that the activities of smugglers in their area of authority was curtailed.
