Customs seizes 4 exotic vehicles with multi-million naira contraband

The Tokunbo vehicles, all unregistered, include a Ford Spacewagon, Audi 80, Golf and Honda cars.

The Customs Area Comptroller, Mrs Helen Nwokocha who paraded the seized items to journalists in Ibadan over the last week  disclosed that only last month, a total of eight seizures were made including assorted textile materials, Tokunbo vehicles, imported rice and vegetable oils with duty paid value of N11.25 milion.

She told newsmen that the officers and men of the command made the latest arrest along the Ayegun/Benin Republic border axis in the Oke Ogun Area following a tip off that the smugglers were on their way through that border point.

According to Nwokocha, the customs officers and men moved in and hid themselves in the bush and subsequently pounced on the smugglers who later surfaced as informed.

However, the unsuspecting smugglers who could not withstand the customs attack abandoned their vehicles having securely locked them up and fled the scene through the bush paths, Nwokocha said.

“We now base our arrests mainly on information”, the customs boss stated just as she declared that the officers and men of the customs service were not relenting on their efforts against smugglers.

She said, “Ibadan has become a no- go area for smugglers. We have got our informants. The smugglers are therefore advised to stop depriving the nation of revenue.”

She added that the Area Command was also working hand in hand with the Comptroller General’s Monitoring Team.
