A father has made an impassioned plea for advice on tattooing one of his ‘very premature’ identical twin baby boys so they can identify the one who needs medication for health issues every four hours.
The unidentified man took to internet forum Reddit to explain how his sons, Adam and Aaron, were identical save for one thing – Aaron’s health complications.
Even the man and his wife could not tell them apart, and had tried using permanent marker on Adam’s arm to identify him.
But the situation came to a head when the boys were being cared for by their grandmother.
After a bath resulted in the identifying pen marks being washed off, their grandmother gave Adam the medication intended for Aaron.
The man wrote: ‘Adam ended up very sick and Aaron in hospital for a week. This is a serious, extreme situation and I don’t want to take this risk again. We have had other mix ups with the boys but it has never wound up this bad’.
He and his wife had tried numerous options, such as shaving one son’s head, different clothing, nail polish, bracelets and anklets, but were looking for a more permanent solution to the problem – hence the tattoo idea.
‘I need to do something permanent. I could have lost both my sons last weekend and I’m desperate. I am only after permanant solutions. Believe me when I say we have tried everything else before and it didn’t work. Please help me. I don’t want to lose my boy’.
The two options they were seriously considering were a small dot tattoo on a foot or ear piercings.
Other Reddit users weighed in with their comments on the matter.
Some suggested an ear piercing was a good idea, and that the child may grow up to like the piercing.
But the father was concerned about his sons’ ‘really uptight’ paediatrician, whom he was concerned would report the family if they tattooed the boys.It is unknown what option the family decided upon.
