Daggash loses mother

The minister confirmed the death yesterday in a telephone interview and stated that her remains would arrive Nigeria today.The late Laraba trained as a nurse in England before returning to start work in the health sector in Kaduna. She was a director of the National Youths Service Corps at the inception of the scheme by the Gowon administration after the Biafran war. She was also a board member of the University College, Ibadan while she served as Secretary of State for Health during Chief Ernest Shonekan’s administration, following General Babangida’s transition in 1993. She was conferred with a national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, OFR.

The late Laraba was National Leader, of Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa, a northern women group for over 20 years before she later established Borno Women League and served as its president until she died. She was a philanthropist and was regarded as an elder stateswoman in Borno. She is survived by three children and grandchildren.
