The death has been announced of Hajiya Rabi Idris (Hajiya Umma), the mother of the Acting Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Trust newspapers, Malam Hamza Idris.

Confirming Hajiya Rabi’s death, one of her sons, Aminu Idris, said she passed away in the early hours of Monday, June 23, 2025, at her residence in Kano, after a brief illness.

Aged 75 years,  Hajiya Umma left behind 11 children and 44 grandchildren; and many other wards she adopted and nurtured.

Late Hajiya Rabi was laid to rest at the Wali Maigeza Cemetery, popularly known as Kofar Mazugal Cemetery, in Kano metropolis.

Her funeral prayer was attended by hundreds of people, who offered prayers for the repose of her soul.

“She was a wonderful wife, a wonderful mother and a true Muslim. She lived a fulfilled life. We are all proud to be her children. We pray Almighty Allah accepts her and grants her Jannatil Firdausi,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has offered condolences to the acting Editor-in-Chief of Daily Trust newspapers over the death of his mother.

In a condolence message issued by his spokesman, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor described late Hajiya Rabi as an exemplary mother and family pillar who lived a life of devotion, compassion and service to her family and community.

Governor Yahaya also conveyed the sympathies of the Northern States Governors’ Forum to the bereaved family.

“I extend our heartfelt condolences to Hamza Idris and his entire family over this great loss. The death of a mother is deeply painful, but we take solace in the exemplary life that Hajiya lived.

“May Allah (SWT) forgive her shortcomings, accept her good deeds and grant her Aljannat-ul-Firdaus. I also pray that Almighty Allah gives Malam Hamza and the entire family members the strength and fortitude to bear this huge loss,” he said.
