A journalist with Media Trust Limited, publisher of Daily Trust newspaper, Nurudeen Oyewole, has won the Senior Journalists Seminar (SJS) Alumni Award of the East-West Center (EWC), to participate in the 6th International Media Conference holding in Singapore.
According to the organizers, Oyewole’s application was among the 22 selected through a rigorous and competitive process.
It would be recalled that Oyewole became an alumnus of the prestigious US-based East-West Center after winning and participating in the 2017 edition of the Senior Journalist Seminar.
The fellowship had engaged Oyewole and 11 other international journalists to participate in meetings, studies, coverage and tours in Washington DC and Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States; Manila and Cotabato City in Philippines as well as Rabat and Fez in Morocco. He was the first journalist from Sub-Saharan Africa to be so honoured since the SJS started in 2003.
In participating at the 6th International Media Conference, Oyewole would be joining 350 other participants from different countries of the world to discuss, analyse and brainstorm on the theme: “What Is News Now.”
“Speakers will focus on forces re-shaping today’s world and the way we report it, such as artificial intelligence, digitalization, social media, ‘fake news,’ attacks on the free press, big data, smart-city testbeds and China’s rise.
“Recognized for exceptional keynote speakers and in-depth panels of journalists and experts, the East-West Center’s biennial International Media Conference also offers media training workshops and unique opportunities to network with international journalists and other professionals,” the statement from the organisers read in part.
Though, the media summit starts on June 24, Oyewole is billed to join a panel of discussants on “covering MENA – Middle East and North African countries” on June 27 in a session to be moderated by Guy Taylor, National Security Team Lead, The Washington Times, Washington, DC. Other co-panelists are: Shakir Reshamwala, the Front Page and Executive Editor, Kuwait Times, Kuwait City and Khaldoun Abukhattab, News Editor, Alhayat Aljadeedah Newspaper, Albireh, Palestine.
