The National Orthopedic Hospital Dala, Kano, has organized a one-day symposium with a view to sensitising the general public on the emerging causes of spinal code injury.
In his welcome address, the Chief Medical Director of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Professor Aminu Zakari Muhammad, said the spinal code injury had a very high and devastating effect, hence the need to educate the public.
“Going by the high and devastating effects of spinal code injury, it is quite logical to organize this symposium in order to sensitize the public on the problems,” he said.
While presenting his paper, Dr Muhammad Lawan Mamman, highlighted the causes of spinal code injury most of which he said came from accidents.
“47 percent of spinal code injury came from road traffic accidents, 23 per cent from falls such as from trees or high places, 14 per cent from assaults such as fight or torture, nine per cent from sports and other factors carry the remaining seven per cent,” he said.
On his part, Dr Waheed Adigun Taoreed, highlighted the burdens associated with the problem such as being unable to cater for oneself and becoming an added responsibility to the care givers which makes it necessary for people to take preventive measures against the problem.
Another paper presenter, Hajiya Amina of RHOWIS Support Group called for collaboration from all stakeholders in order to support people suffering from spinal code injury as government alone could not cater for all.
Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Muhammad Nuhu Salihu, said because of the high cost of treatment and management of the problem, it was necessary to educate the public so as to avoid engaging on things that could cause the fatal injury.
