Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is wary of the political influence of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dalung, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated this during an interview aired on Mic On Podcast, where he described the legal challenges facing El-Rufai as politically motivated.
He said the manner in which the cases are being handled suggests an attempt to keep the former governor out of the political space until after the next election cycle.
“The conduct of the prosecution now tends to be persecution, not prosecution,” Dalung said. “All the offences El-Rufai is being accused of are bailable offences, but the bail processes have been manipulated. He has obtained about four bails from the courts and all those bails have conditions that cannot be fulfilled.”
He alleged that there is a deliberate effort to ensure El-Rufai remains entangled in legal proceedings.
“There is a deliberate intention of having him incarcerated until this transition is over because one of the persons Bola Tinubu fears most is El-Rufai,” he said.
Dalung argued that El-Rufai played a critical role in Tinubu’s emergence as president in 2023, particularly in securing support from the North at a crucial stage of the race.
“Without El-Rufai, Tinubu would not have been accepted by the North in 2023,” he said.
The former minister recalled how El-Rufai allegedly mobilised northern governors in support of the presidency shifting to the South and subsequently rallied them behind Tinubu’s candidacy.
Dalung said Tinubu was fully aware of El-Rufai’s political capacity and influence, which, according to him, explains the alleged efforts to keep the former governor occupied with court appearances.
“Tinubu knew the capacity of El-Rufai very well, and the best they can do is to have him incarcerated, alternating him from one court to another,” he said.
“El-Rufai came out categorically to launch a campaign of ending Tinubu’s tenure by 2027, so of course the appropriate time to get him is to get him locked up.”Dalung: El-Rufai ie being held for his political influence
